"Instant gratification takes too long".

"Tilfredstillelse til enhver tid tar for lang tid". Carrie Fisher

I have had trouble finding a good illustration of this statement. Here is my contribution, which may be a bit on the side of what I had wanted to present.

Askeladden that "kappåt" with the troll  (translated by google)!

This is a Norwegian folk fairytale. It would take too long to eat the food during the race-eating for Askeladden, so he had to be creative. The food could not be enjoyed under these circumstances.

Askeladden means the lad who takes out the ash from the fireplace.

There was once a farmer who had three sons, he was in humble beginnings and old and frail, and his sons would not take something. At the farm heard a great, great forests, and it would risk that the boys would cut in and see about getting paid off some of the debt. At long last he got them on the trot, and the oldest was going to cut first. When he was lost in the woods and had to cut a beard spruce, there was a big, giant trolls to him. "If you cut my forest, I will kill you!" said the troll. When the boy heard that, he threw the hatchet and put back the best he could. He came clean out of breath home and told what had happened to him, but his father said he was a rabbit heart; trolls had never scared him from being cut when he was young, he thought. The next day was the second son along, and when did it exactly the same way. Then he probably had cut any cut in the tree, the Troll came to him and said: "If you cut my forest, I will kill you!" The boy dared hardly look at him, he threw the hatchet and took to his heels as his brother and just as quickly. When he returned home, his father became angry and said that the trolls had never scared him when he was young. The third day would Askeladden away. "Yes, you!" said the two eldest, "you should probably do it, you who have never been outside the door!" He said no more about it, Askeladden, but asked only able to get food with them. The mother had no sul, and then she hung on the pot for åbreste little to him what he had in his bag, and let off. When he had cut a little while, the Troll came to him and said, "If you cut my forest, I will kill you!" But the boy was not slow, he ran away in the forest after the cheese and squeezed it so whey jumped. "Tier you do not ask," he screamed to the troll, I will hug you, as I squeeze the water out of this white stone! "" No, dear save me, "said the troll," I will help you to cut. "Yes,the conditions saved the boy to him, and the troll was able to cut, so they had fields and cut off several dozen a day When it was approaching evening, the troll said: "Now you can watch your home, it's closer to me than you." Yes, the boy was with, and when they came home to the troll, he would make a fire in the hearth, while the boy would go for water to porridge pot, but there were two iron buckets there, so big and heavy that he could not bear to lee them once. So the boy said: "It is not worth taking the thimble, I go for complete well I do." "No, dear friend," said the troll, "I can not lose my well, making up the heat, shall I go for water." When he came back with the water, they cooked up a capable big pot of porridge. "It's the same," said the boy, "Do you like me, are we kappete." "Oh yes!" replied the troll, for he always thought he would be in. Yes, they sat down to dinner, but the boy stole out to take skinnskreppen and tie in front of him, and he poured more in his bag than he ate himself. When the basket was full, he took up his knife and cut a gash in his bag. The troll looked at him, but said nothing. When they had eaten a good while, let the troll off the spoon. "No, now I can not bear more," he said. "You must eat!" replied the boy, "I am barely half full yet, I do. Do as I did, and cut a hole in the stomach, then you can eat as much as you want." "But it does well dreadfully hurt?"asked the troll. "Oh, nothing to speak of," replied the boy. So did the troll that the boy said, and then a well know he put his life to. But the boy took all the silver and gold in the rock fans, and went home. With that, he could always get paid off some of the debt.

  1. I love Th Kittelsen! My mother was adopted when she was young by my grandfather who's family came from Norway. (In fact in the town they settled in in Manitoba, his family made up half the village and there was another big family there who's family made up the other half -- maybe another Norwegian family or a Swedish family, since they had all sorts of jokes against Swedes. There's a museum there now with his picture hanging in it, which is strange, but nice.) Anyway, my grandfather used to always read stories like this to me from a dual-language book of Th. Kittelsen's -- he was sort of a celebrity in our house!
